Process maps are incredibly useful tools for solving a broad set of problems. A process map can be used for:

  • Honesty. Process mappers are encouraged to “walk the process” to see what the process is, not what they think it is or what it should be.

  • Focus. You can’t fix everything at once – a process map helps define the specific areas that a team will address (and which it won’t).

  • Evaluation. Visualizing alternative processes can simplify assessment and comparison.

  • Communication. Effectively communicates what changed and what is expected going forward – to both operators and higher-ups.

For all these cases, presentation is important, and if you are presenting to stakeholders, your boss, or a client, a clear and aesthetically pleasing process map reflects well on you.
