Overview
Process maps are incredibly useful tools for solving a broad set of problems. A process map can be used for:
Definition. Establishing a common understanding of the process where a problem is Occurring.
Honesty. Process mappers are encouraged to “walk the process” to see what the process is, not what they think it is or what it should be.
Insight. Representing the process visually can expose problems such as bottlenecks, complexity, inefficiency, and redundancy.
Focus. You can’t fix everything at once – a process map helps define the specific areas that a team will address (and which it won’t).
Evaluation. Visualizing alternative processes can simplify assessment and comparison.
Communication. Effectively communicates what changed and what is expected going forward – to both operators and higher-ups.
For all these cases, presentation is important, and if you are presenting to stakeholders, your boss, or a client, a clear and aesthetically pleasing process map reflects well on you.
